Welcome to Summer Reading Season! (US)

Summer is a time to escape into a great book, meet new characters (real and imagined), and travel to places created by master storytellers.

Each of the Upper School tabs has grade specific instructions for required and recommended Summer Reading from the English Department and the Librarians. Please make sure you scroll to the bottom of each page for all of the sections. If you do not have your Sora account activated, you may make an appointment with Adrienne at aalmeida@friendsseminary.org until June 15, 2023. We hope you will support your local libraries and local independently owned bookshops for print copies of the books.

General Instructions for US Summer Reading

On LibGuides, you’ll be able to access required and optional summer reading materials through Sora. We encourage you to make use of this amazing resource throughout the summer.

However, you MUST bring your own hard copy of the required reading with you on the first day of school in September. We expect you to have read and annotated that copy.

You are welcome to make use of any edition or version of the optional readings that you can get your hands on.

Please keep in mind that even if you rush home and read the text tonight, you should still give yourself time to review it in the days immediately before school begins.  The first day will be better for everyone if the text is fresh in your mind.

Financial aid is available for required books. If you have any questions, please reach out to Sam Margles, Director of Financial Aid and Affordability and Assistant Director of Admissions, who will be happy to help you. She can be reached at smargles@friendsseminary.org.

Optional Summer Reading for All Upper School Students: Read any of these books in any edition you can find. Join us for lunches in the early fall to discuss them.
